Bahamas shopping

Find the good places to shop in Bahamas

The first thing you need to know before embarking on a Bahamas shopping spree is that the local currency is the Bahamian Dollar ($), and it is tied 1:1 to the US Dollar. US Dollars, thus, are widely accepted around the Bahamas, but it is also possible to exchange currency at bureaus de exchange in the airports, cruise terminals and around the islands.

Shopping in the Bahamas is a wonderful experience. Here, you’ll find unique, locally made items, many of which are hand crafted by local artisans and craftsmen. The most popular spots for Bahamas shopping are of course the islands’ cities, namely Nassau. Nassau is home to numerous boutiques and markets offering all types of local clothing and crafts.

Among the most common Bahamas souvenirs are items woven from local dried reeds known as “straw”. The best place to pick up these types of crafts is at the Straw Market, which is located along Bay and Market Streets in Nassau. Within this colorful market you will find stalls peddling all sorts of items made from straw, including bags, hats, baskets and dolls. These straw items make a great souvenir to bring home from the Bahamas. Beyond straw, you’ll also find Junkanoo art, jewelry made from shells, ceramics and other sorts of sea-inspired items.
